Is Your Cat Drinking Enough Water?

Cats are known for drinking less water than they should, especially if they eat mostly dry food. This habit goes back to their desert-dwelling ancestors, who relied on moisture from prey rather than frequent drinking.

In modern life, however, insufficient water intake can lead to urinary issues, kidney problems, or crystal formation, which makes it important for owners to pay attention to their cat’s hydration habits.

One of the easiest ways to notice whether your cat drinks enough is by observing the litter box, the frequency of urination, and general behavior. Cats that drink less water usually urinate less often, have darker urine, and may seem lethargic or uncomfortable. If anything seems unusual, it’s worth focusing a bit more on their water intake.

Many cats prefer fresh, moving water, and this is where you can make a real difference. Cat fountains often encourage them to drink more because the flowing water feels fresher and more interesting. If you don’t have a fountain, simply changing the water regularly and choosing wide, shallow bowls can help – many cats dislike when their whiskers touch the edges and may avoid drinking because of it.

Sometimes, it’s enough to place water bowls in several spots around your home, away from food or litter. Cats love to explore, and they’re more likely to stop and drink if they „run into“ water during their usual routes. Some even prefer slightly colder water, so adding an ice cube on warm days can make it more appealing.

You can also improve hydration through food. Introducing wet food, offering cat-safe broths, or mixing a little warm water into dry food can significantly increase their fluid intake without much effort. For picky cats, even the aroma of plain chicken broth (without salt or seasoning) can encourage them to drink more.

If you notice that your cat still drinks very little or shows signs of discomfort, a veterinary checkup is always a good idea. Cats are experts at hiding symptoms, and urinary or kidney issues are much easier to treat when caught early.

Encouraging your cat to drink more sometimes requires creativity, but with a few adjustments in the environment and diet, most cats quickly develop healthier habits. What matters most is paying attention to their preferences and providing options that keep them hydrated, comfortable, and healthy.
